How do we know if a Japanese script is hiragana, katakana or kanji?
We use hiragana to write Japanese words phonetically (that means as they sound)
We use katakana to write non-Japanese words that have been borrowed for example sport, strawberry, vanilla are all words that are now used in the Japanese language but are not Japanese words originally.
We use kanji to represent words or parts of words. Each kanji is like a mini picture that can also be written using one or more hiragana.
